iPad standingThis week we have our final weekend course Dyslexia/Dyspraxia and Creativity running and the last weekend for our level 3 course Diploma in Massage Therapy. Then our last course of the year will be the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Summer School near the end of July. College students usually think all staff at Hillcroft finish working and go straight off on holiday once they finish their courses. This is not the case!

We’re busy moving our eresources from OpenAthens to Shibboleth. Once Shibboleth is up and running we’ll be looking to use it as the gateway to integrating other college databases and software like Office 365 and BKSB (a learning and assessment tool) and our eILP (electronic Individual Learning Plan). The impact on students will be they only need one username and password to access any of the them instead of having multiple ones.

We’re also upgrading our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) from 2.6.1 to 2.9. Once this is done we’ll be giving it a summer clean with new photos for a fresh feel for the autumn and running more staff training.

In addition we’re looking at integrating our Management Information System (MIS) into our Heritage online library catalogue so we can automatically transfer student address details into it. At the same time we’re aiming to get more of our students rating our material on the catalogue and writing reviews to build their confidence in using digital resources and writing. Plus there’s nothing better than getting a recommendation from someone who has read the book or watched the DVD…

There are many more things we’re doing over the summer. Next week’s post will tell you a bit more about what we’re planning for our Academic Integrity Workshops where we teach information literacy skills.

Reading Ahead posterOn Wednesday 24 June we passed over Six Book Challenge certificates to our students from Future Proof/Next Level and Dyslexia: Reading at our Diversity and Achievement Day. They’ve done a great job reading 6 items each and reviewing them ahead of the 29 June national deadline for the prize draw. We’ll be entering their names for the prize draw. If they win they will get a free trip to London with a friend. There is also the chance to win Kobo Touch ereaders.

Six Book Challenge helps adults boost their reading skills, gain confidence and read more. This is the end of our third year of the programme and it’s a delight talking to students about their reviews and giving them a sticker of their choice as they review each item.

The Reading Agency who run the Six Book Challenge reading programme have renamed and rebranded the programme for next year. It will now be known as Reading Ahead. Same format – just an emphasis that one of the six items you read can be anything from a website to a leaflet, to a recipe, or a magazine article, poem, email or book. We’ll be getting some of the new promotional material ready for starting it in our autumn 2015 term. Find out what Hillcroft College: courses are coming up at Hillcroft on our website.

If you’ve got a child then look out for local public libraries running the Summer Reading Challenge to keep up their reading over the school break. Kingston Libraries local to our college are running this for kids and for adults.

 

Six Book Challenge promotional material

Back in October the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) team submitted their work with the literacy and English as a Second and Other Language (ESOL) lead tutors and their learners around literacy and the Six Book Challenge (6BC)  for a Council for Learning Resources in Colleges (CoLRiC) Best Practice Award. This week we heard that CoLRIC had received a large number of LRC entries and we were fortunate enough to gain a Commendation.

The awards were running for the first time  and were open to COLRiC members around the United Kingdom which the team discovered at the Northampton College roadshow. The team had worked with tutors and learners in selecting graded readers and fiction that learners could vote on and suggest which the team then ordered for use as part of the 6BC programme.

The selection was informed from research the team did before the autumn term began visiting London bookshops for graded readers, graphic novels and fiction. The Learning Resources Assistant had created a 6BC scrapbook to help learners on these course understand what type and level of reading could contribute to the six items which 6BC participants could read and review in their reading diaries. Our main focus was to encourage reading and not to put learners off by the level of the material.

Through the challenge the LRC team discussed the reading diary reviews with the learners and found out valuable feedback from them which they could use for future stock selection and how the students rated the material. We introduced stickers to add to the reviews to encourage learners to take part. The feedback from the learners showed how much the programme boosted their reading and one of the learners enjoyed it so much she bought stickers for the students to place in their diaries.

The team also worked closely with the ESOL learners in looking at themes in the plots and characters in the books.
