Jisc Hillcroft College Small is (digitally) beautifulOver the summer Jisc published our case study on digital skills development at Hillcroft College in their Case Studies: Journeys Towards Digital Capability. The report also explains how we’ve been developing digital skills with students and teaching staff.

As a student you will have either experienced the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) team bringing in iPads or Kindles into the classroom or taken part in our information skills workshops where we teach you how to search for material on the catalogue, use ebooks, reference using the Citation Machine and about copyright and plagiarism. This autumn we have been using Class OneNote Notebooks in the class room with Access to Higher Education (HE) Humanities and Social Sciences, Access to HE Health and Human Sciences and Introduction to Pre Access learners. Following the training we have been doing on Microsoft Imagine Academy.

As Digital & Learning Resources Manager introducing students to the Class OneNote Notebook I’ve found it really takes over from using an interactive whiteboard. Students and I have been impressed by the dyslexia-friendly Immersive Reader with its read aloud feature which also gives you the chance to change the font size and style and colour. We’ve all really liked the collaboration space which we’ve used in Introduction to Pre Access to share work we’ve done in pairs and groups creating Harvard references.

What’s also really useful is the ability to send material from the content library out into students’ individual note books and all of the tagging features so I can set up things for students to do that they can then tick off once complete. Here’s an example of the checklist

Screen with VLELast week we launched our new design for our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle. Our designers at Overt created it using their Overt Quick Metro design.

The new look for the VLE was a collaboration between teaching and learning staff and students. Both the students and staff wanted a cleaner more modern feel that made it easy to navigate the site. Students wanted all the regular things they use to be easily accessible from one place.This includes their email, courses they are registered on, My Learning Space (MLS) their electronic Individual Learning Plan (eILP), BKSB and course feedback forms. These are now under the My Learning Room area.

We’ve incorporated a new accessibility toolbar as over 45% of our learners have a declared disability. The toolbar is a Moodle block which has readback features, allows them to change the font size, background colours and use overlays.

The LRC Manager has created a course template to make course creation easier and bring together essential course material that students wanted together eg aims and objectives, scheme of work, assessment and course handbook through consulting with colleagues Angela Rideau Elearning Coordinator from Barnet Southgate and Rod Kain LRC Manager at NewVic colleges via Kav Dev Senior Advisor at RSC London. She’s also created a guide to help students and staff understand the new design, get hints and tips on creating material eg sizing images to fit the new course grid blocks and a style guide.

This week the LRC team started revamping the LRC pages. It’s been a great chance to use the training we had from Dave Foord at A6 Training using Moodle Books and embedding videos.

 

BlendspaceLast week the LRC team was working with students on the Introduction to Careers in Fashion, Crafts and Retail. The team created content to help the students gather ideas for a project they were working on to design a necklace.

Once the team had found a collection of websites on fashion history and design in clothes, shoes and other accessories they supplemented websites with video clips. Enthused by a demonstration of Blendspace at Jisc RSC London’s E-factor 2014: It’s All About  Learning and Teaching the LRC Assistant added the material onto Blendspace for the students to access. She then linked it into the course page on Moodle our Virtual Learning Environment.

Blendspace was demonstrated at E-Factor 2014 by Martin Compton from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College at his Less Teaching More Learning session. Martin recommended Blendspace for creating course material that students can use for self-directed learning.
