Garden at Hillcroft through the LRC windowPlans are under way at Hillcroft for celebrating achievement and diversity day 2015 on Wednesday.

There will be live music, BBQ-style food, a singalong, face-painting, henna tattoos and award-giving.

The garden is looking fantastic and all we need now is the good weather to stay. We are inviting all students from courses in the last year, their children and relatives are welcome. Please check your Hillcroft emails for the invite details.

Pop into the LRC before or after the event to return your books/DVDs in the red bin behind the door.

We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Gathering of the funny tie wearers at World Book Night

Gathering of the fun tie wearers at World Book Night (it was a beautiful day in fact)

Last Thursday was special in the LRC because we hosted games and a book giveaway as part of the World Book Night 2015 celebrations. The theme was linked with our choice of giveaway book ‘Water for Elephants‘ which is set in a circus during the Great Depression. So we enjoyed cream soda and lemonade, popcorn and pretzels. We also had a crazy/fun tie dress-up theme to transform us from being plain rubes.

We had 10 circus-themed activities with 3 spot prizes for fast completers of the activities. These prize-winning activities were the reorder the stories, recommend a book on Padlet and word jumbles. If you received a copy of ‘Water for Elephants’ from us and fancy another chance to win a prize here is a short survey you can complete. We have more copies to give away too so please do not hesitate to come in and ask us for the elephant book if you missed out on the 23rd April.

Let us know if you enjoyed World Book Night or have any suggestions to other events we could celebrate. Big thank you to everyone who got involved and to the The Reading Agency for granting us permission to be official book givers.

Libraries A-Z Letter N by Josh Filhol licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.

It was National Libraries Day last Saturday with lots of events going on all over the country to celebrate libraries. Libraries are often unappreciated because people don’t know much about them. What actually goes on behind the scenes in virtual, academic, public law, company, art and museum libraries to make them so important? Are libraries in different countries different from those in the UK? You can browse the international library collections online though the World Digital Library.

So for our part, we have been thinking of fun ways to promote our resources and services to our staff and students. We want to make sure what we do day-to-day and overall is not a mystery. Plus it is fun to share the library love and talk to students and staff.

  • We are having a book vote for new books on the VLE. The 11 titles we selected came from awards lists and feature some challenging themes and most are written by women.
  • We are also displaying what staff and students are currently reading in the LRC which we hope will inspire everyone to borrow not just from us but from your friends and tutors too.
  • At lunchtime on Wednesday (11th Feb) we are holding a live Padlet session where everyone can post to our virtual wall to share what makes libraries special. On the day we will email everyone the link so you can post from your smartphone or computer wherever you happen to be. Or come into the LRC and post on one of our iPads.

We would love to know what you think here too. If you would like to leave a comment with a question about resources or libraries in general. For example, you can ask us about: ebooks, textbooks, reference books, DVDs, pdf versions of books, using the VLE, referencing, study skills.

A quick message from the LRC team today. Whether it be for Christmas or another festival or celebration, we wish you all happy holidays. We are looking forward to seeing you all from 5th January 2015. If you have any suggestions for books or other resources the LRC could order for next term please email us over the holidays (lrc@hillcroft.ac.uk). Then we can evaluate your request when we get back and see what copies we could buy.
