Hillcroft LRC

Archive for June 2014

Hillcroft CollgeThis week BBC 2 started a two-part series on Shopgirls: The True Story of Life Behind the Counter presented by Dr Pamela Cox. Shown on Tuesday 24 June at 2100 the programme charts how women first become involved in shop work and the conditions they worked under.

When it was originally set up in 1920 Hillcroft College  included shop assistants from Debenhams department store amongst its first cohort who were sponsored by Debenhams to improve their education and skills. Our LRC team is recording the programme to add to our archive on women.

Hillcroft is based in the house which belonged to Wilberforce Bryant the owner of the famous Bryant & May matchstick factory in east London where the matchgirls went on strike. 5 July next week marks 126 years since the strike and there is a series of events taking place at the second Matchwomen’s Festival at Hamilton House in London. It includes talks on the strikers, walks and also examines working conditions today. Tickets are £2 and the under 16s go free. Louise Raw author of Strike a Light will be speaking and Kate Connelly on her book about the suffragette leader Sylvia Pankhurst Sylvia Pankhurst: Suffragette, Socialist and Scourge of Empire. Our team will be adding both of these books to our collection.

Catalogue pcThis week we had students here for our  Introduction to Careers in Beauty, Spas, Hair and Nails course. The tutor was keen for us to guide them to some useful websites on careers in this sector.

Our LRC Assistant researched and produced a list of some of the professional bodies which govern the sectors, maintain standards, provide a network and offer training/courses in this area. We already had a range of websites on our library catalogue covering apprenticeships.

In addition we have a book to match this area:

Introduction to hair and beauty sector – student book entry 3 level 1 by Gilly Ford, Helen Stewart and Samantha Taylor

We also provided them with a list of well-known salons for them to follow up. Here is a selection:-

Countries Around the World booksThis week the World Cup kicked off in Brazil. We’ve got a selection of colourful books on world cities which includes the World Cup host nation’s famous city Rio de Janeiro:

Global Cities: Rio de Janeiro by Simon Scoones

is part of a series published by Evans. They give you key facts about the history, transport, culture, economy, leisure, tourism and environment in the city. Plus an insider’s view on what it’s like to live there. We’ve also got from the series:

Global  Cities: Mexico by Edward Parker.

We all know there’s many nations taking part in World Cup. Raintree’s Countries Around the World series complements these providing a brief history of the country, information on the regions, animals, infrastructure and culture of the country. Plus they come with a timeline and key facts. We have:

Algeria by Lori McManus

China by Patrick Catel

Liberia by Robin S. Doak

Morocco by Nick Hunter

We got both of the series based on feedback from our students wanting more information about other cultures and countries.

Northern College Library and Learning Support Centre reading roomOn 19 May 2014 our Learning Resources Centre (LRC) Manager visited the LRC team at Northern College for Residential and Community Adult Education at Stainborough, Barnsley.

The Northern Residential team is a double Council for Learning Resources in Colleges (CoLRiC) Beacon award winner for curriculum integration through their work with students as personal tutors and for integrating the use of tablets into the curriculum for  in the classroom from 2007 and 2013.

The visit was useful for gaining insight and comparing LRC services to learners; induction, support, eresources and stock. As well as the history of the Northern and Hillcroft.

Part of Northern’s Wentworth Castle grounds have been recently restored and are managed by their Wentworth Castle Heritage Trust.
